Budget 2026–27: Can GST Reforms and Logistics Lift Retail Demand?

As Budget 2026–27 approaches, India’s retail sector is looking to the government for policy support to revive consumption and ensure sustainable long-term growth. From furniture and home décor to apparel and online retail, industry leaders believe that GST simplification, tax relief, and stronger logistics infrastructure could significantly boost consumer demand.

With discretionary spending under pressure, retailers say the upcoming Budget presents a timely opportunity to address structural challenges and unlock growth across categories.

Furniture and Home Decor Sector Seeks Simpler Taxes

The furniture and home segment expects Budget 2026 to play a key role in stimulating fresh demand.

According to an industry expert, the Budget could act as a catalyst for growth if it reduces the tax burden on high-value home accessories and consumer goods. He noted that simpler GST slab structures and smoother input tax credit mechanisms would help both physical retailers and online platforms compete on a level playing field.

The expert also highlighted the importance of stronger MSME credit guarantees and lower multimodal transportation costs, which could accelerate deliveries to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where demand for home-related products is rising rapidly.

Apparel Retailers Push for GST 2.0 Reforms

The apparel retail sector is calling for meaningful GST 2.0 reforms to sustain its growth momentum.

Another industry expert said the apparel market is poised for expansion, driven by the rapid growth of e-commerce and omnichannel retail. However, he stressed that Budget 2026 must prioritise GST reforms to support this trajectory.

He added that rationalisation and unification of GST rates across fashion categories would reduce disputes, ease compliance, and lower working capital pressure for MSMEs. Simplified regulations and reduced freight costs would further strengthen supply chains.

Importantly, he noted that personal income tax relief for the middle class could directly translate into higher spending on clothing and fashion.

Online Retail Eyes Stronger Supply Chains

The online retail sector is also closely watching Budget 2026, with expectations centred on logistics efficiency and consumer spending growth.

An industry expert said that faster multimodal logistics, improved digital tracking systems, and continued MSME support would enable e-retail to grow in a more inclusive and technology-driven manner.

Budget 2026 Could Give Consumption a Much-Needed Boost

Across segments, retailers agree on one key point: if tax reliefGST simplification, and logistics support come together in Budget 2026-27, the retail sector could see a meaningful revival in consumption.

Such measures would not only ease operational challenges for businesses but also encourage consumer spending, helping India’s retail ecosystem regain momentum in the coming year.
