A landmark Memorandum of Understanding has been entered into by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) and the Carbon Market Association of India (CMAI) to strengthen India’s carbon markets and decarbonisation efforts. Through this strategic partnership, expertise in carbon trading and sustainable business practices is aimed to be developed across the corporate sector.
Key Objectives:
The collaboration is focused on four main areas:
i) Specialized training programs covering carbon markets, low-carbon industrial solutions, and sustainable finance are to be developed.
ii) Joint research initiatives on decarbonisation strategies and carbon trading mechanisms are to be undertaken.
iii) Workshops and conferences for stakeholder dialogue are to be organized.
iv) Policy advocacy support for India’s net-zero ambitions is to be provided.
Government Support:
Several key initiatives were highlighted by Transport Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari, who attended the inaugural IICA-CMAI Masterclass:
i) Biofuels and green hydrogen have been emphasized as crucial elements for India’s economic future.
ii) A target has been set to achieve hydrogen fuel costs of $1 per kg through advanced research.
iii) Innovative projects, including Bio Bitumin, Bio Aviation-fuel, and Bio CNG, are being focused upon.
iv) A vision has been outlined to establish India as a green hydrogen exporting nation.
Capacity Building Initiatives:
Significant educational components have been introduced through the partnership:
i) An IICA Certificate Programme in Decarbonisation has been launched to create corporate expertise.
ii) Training for carbon offset mechanism development is being provided.
iii) Long-term decarbonisation strategies are being integrated.
iv) Case-study-based discussions for enhanced learning are being conducted.
Industry Participation:
Strong industry engagement was demonstrated during the inaugural masterclass:
i) Participation was recorded from over 70 professionals.
ii) Representation was made by leading corporates and PSUs.
iii) Attendance was marked by government bodies.
iv) Embassy officials and international organizations were present.
Institutional Framework:
Two significant organizations have been brought together through this collaboration:
i) IICA: An autonomous institution under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, focusing on corporate sector development.
ii) CMAI: A non-profit industry group working with key ministries to facilitate India’s transition to a net-zero future.
This partnership is regarded as a significant step in India’s journey toward sustainable development and carbon market maturity. Through structured training programs, research initiatives, and policy advocacy, a robust ecosystem for carbon trading is aimed to be created, while support is being provided for the nation’s environmental goals.
